Planning your laundry...

We have found one of the most overlooked features in homes tends to be the laundry! It can become such a pain point in your house, especially as most people don't love having to do laundry. A well-designed laundry will change your life, we promise!

Prioritise storage. Include as much storage as physically possible! While it might seem overkill now, it will be full before you know it and you can never have enough places to store things.

Double stack your washer and drier. Front loading washing machines are not only more efficient than top loaders, they also save on space. If you are having a washer and drier combo you can stack them on top of each other to conserve space, or you can slot them directly under your bench to retain bench space. Make sure when you are planning that you make your bench tall enough to fit your appliances underneath.

Tile your splashback and floor. Unprotected walls are easily damaged by water and/or soap splatters. A tiled splashback will protect your walls and also make them easier to clean. Additionally, it's common to have water splashes on the floor of your laundry, so for an easy to maintain and robust floor we recommend tiling. Check out our blog on measuring up your space to figure out how many tiles you would need for your laundry.

Have a hanging area for clothes. If you include a hanging area we recommend placing it above a sink or a tray to catch any drips. This is especially useful for hand wash garments.

Ventilation. The last thing you want is a stuffy room prone to mould. If you don't have a window you can open it might be worth installing a ventilation system to keep the room fresh! The best option for ventilation would be to have your laundry in a room with outdoor access.

Include electrical outlets. It may seem obvious but it is actually a commonly forgotten feature of laundry design. Imagine setting up your whole laundry and the only powerpoints are down behind the washing machine. You never know what you might need to plug in!

Choose a design you love. Make your laundry a space you actually want to spend time in. It might seem silly to spend money on a part of the house that won't be seen by most people, but think of all the hours you will be in there, why not make it an enjoyable, fun space. It's also the perfect opportunity to make some bolder design choices.
